How to Join

What are the first steps I need to take to join Troop 648?

Once you decide to join our troop there are five easy next steps.

  1. Please contact a parent in Troop 648 to let them know you are interested or come to a weekly troop meeting (held on Mondays at 7:30pm) and talk with the Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster.
  2. Complete the Youth Application. Please give this completed application to the Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster.

  3. Obtain the Scout uniform. (Please see next section for a couple suggested retailers.) This will include a short sleeve shirt, pants, a World Scout Emblem (purple), and council shoulder patch. The Troop will provide the neckerchief and slide as well as the Troop shoulder patch with '648'.

  4. Quickly review the Scout handbook if you’re not familiar with Scouting. You don't need to read the whole book but you might be able to answer some of your questions about Scouting with this book.

  5. Read these "Helpful Hints," which we developed for parents of new Troop 648 Scouts.

Where can I buy the Scout uniform and other Scouting supplies?

Please visit a local Scout store (click here)!

What are the expected time commitments for parents and Scouts?

Parents and Scouts are encouraged to attend the weekly troop meetings. These meetings usually last about an hour. Generally, we try to keep Scout activities and lessons at a level that won’t interfere with school and other interests (e.g., sports). If there are conflicts with a troop activity there are plenty of ways in which you can catch up with the missed activity.

What are the expected costs for participating in Troop 648?

The annual Troop 648 dues are approximately $250 per year. This amount can be offset by fundraising.

Uniform—The uniform and its cost vary by program for both youth and adult. See www.scoutstuff.org for details and current prices. Uniforms may also be purchased at Casual Adventure, 3451 Washington Blvd., Arlington, VA. Scout parents are not required to purchase a uniform.

There is also typically a cost associated with each outing.
